According to Leibowitz’s approach, that the Torah is not meant to teach science, all your claims are invalid. The main point of the Torah is the commandments, and they must be fulfilled.

Dear Yishai,

Professor Leibowitz argued that the Holy Writ and Halacha are human creations and his call to fulfill Torah and the commandments cannot be rationally explained. At the same time, he treated the religious and the Charedi as a despicable and loathsome society still enslaved by a outlook suited to the diaspora. He often quoted Chazal’s saying “Any scholar who has no reason–a carcass is better than he.”

As long as the religious public does not instigate a realistic program for the new reality, “political independence for the Jewish nation,” it is as an empty vessel which has naught but nonsensical slogans and outdated values.

Sincerely,

Daat Emet
